Payments & Payouts

Disbursement

The general term for money being paid out from the platform to a program, often used interchangeably with payout.

What it means

Disbursement is a general term describing money moving out of the fundraising platform and into a program's own control, whether through a single payout or a series of payouts spread across a campaign's active window and closeout. In practice, disbursement and payout are often used interchangeably to describe the same underlying event: funds leaving HypeRaise and landing in the program's bank account.

How it works on HypeRaise

Some programs, particularly those working closely with a school business office or a formal nonprofit accounting structure, may already use the term disbursement in their own internal financial language and processes. Recognizing that HypeRaise's payout terminology and a school's disbursement terminology are describing the same underlying movement of funds helps avoid confusion when a treasurer is trying to match platform reporting against school-level financial records.

Key details

Whether a program calls it a payout or a disbursement, the underlying mechanics are identical: net proceeds move from the program's Stripe-connected account to its designated bank account, following whatever payout schedule applies to that program's campaign.

For programs required to formally document disbursements as part of a nonprofit's annual filing or a school district's financial audit, HypeRaise's exportable reporting provides the underlying transaction detail needed to support that documentation, showing exactly when funds moved and in what amount.

Why it matters for administrators

Programs working with school business offices may use "disbursement" in their own accounting language, so it helps to recognize the terms are describing the same movement of funds.
